- To advocate and promote safe and sufficient transfusion therapy for all patients globally through dialogue between national and international professional societies, intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations.
- To connect with blood transfusion professionals via high quality, effective communication channels.
- To provide opportunities for knowledge and information exchange on relevant science, clinical and technical practice and research and development.
- To promote, enable and maintain a high level of ethical medical and scientific standards in blood transfusion science and medicine.

- Publishes the high impact journal Vox Sanguinis as well as other key technical periodicals and communiqués.
- Advocates and disseminates the highest ethical, technical and regulatory standards and strengthens the ability of developing and developed countries to implement them.
- Models the highest standards of corporate governance and international citizenship.
