ISBT Science Series - Editor's pick

Denese Marks is National R&D Leader at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service and she is Associate Editor of the ISBT Science Series.

Denese's recommendation is: Immune role of platelets in malaria by Brendan J. McMorran

“The paper from McMorran highlights the dual role of platelets in malaria, as they can prevent infection by killing malarial parasites within red cells, but have also been implicated in cerebral malaria, mediating adhesion of infected red cells to the vascular wall. This paper highlights another role for platelets in immune function, suggesting that platelets may also play a role in protection against other infectious diseases.”
