Welcome President of the Congress
It is with great joy and pride that I announce the 21st Regional Congress of the ISBT, Europe, which will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2011, June the 18 to 22nd. Portugal is a European Nation whose origins go back to the Early Middle Ages. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it ascended to the status of a world power during Europe’s ‘Age of Discovery’ as it built up a vast empire including possessions in South America, Africa and Asia.
Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal and it is the most western capital in mainland Europe. It is located on the Atlantic Ocean coast at the point where the river Tagus flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Lisbon is spread across seven hills always opening a window towards the majestic Tagus River.
Inspired by Portugal history, I invite you all to discover this country and in the same time share your knowledge in this Congress about the state of art in
transfusion medicine. The Local Scientific Committee and the International Scientific Advisory Committee of the ISBT are collaborating in the making of an up-to-date programme with plenary meeting, parallel sessions and abstract
discussion. These will hopefully provide an important contribution to improve evidence-based transfusion medicine and the quality and safety of the blood
transfusion, and help to foresee major trends of development for the coming years.
Lisbon, the only capital of Europe with beach, offers an enjoyable place to hold this meeting, historical sites, museums and wonderful surroundings that provide ideal sites for one day trip, for instance the romantic village of Sintra, Estoril, etc.
It is with great honour that I wait for you in Lisbon where you can find the best of both worlds: pleasure and work. Combine science with pleasure by attending the very powerful social events.
