Dear Colleagues,

I am thrilled to welcome you to the 25th regional Congress of the ISBT that will be held in London, United Kingdom in conjunction with the 33rd Annual Conference of the British Blood Transfusion Society. London is a city where the world connects. It is a vibrant, thriving multicultural city with a dazzling array of attractions from the more sedate pleasures of its world famous art galleries, museums and theatres to the bustle of the city’s commercial heart and busy shopping areas. It has numerous free attractions, parks, shops, and restaurants ready to be enjoyed. The congress will be located at the ExCel, a modern conference and exhibition centre in Docklands, across the river from the O2  arena and close to the 2012 Olympic Park. The area, immediately adjacent to London City airport, is easily accessible from any part of London.
The scientific programme will start on Saturday June 27, with the SHOT symposium. This day will focus on haemovigilance and include the launch of the 2014 SHOT report. The ISBT Academy (Education) day will be held Sunday, June 28 and aims at improvement of the understanding of basic concepts in transfusion medicine. The main scientific programme, starting on Monday June 29, include plenary and parallel sessions and is centered on five tracks: donors, donation and management, immunobiology of blood cells, adverse events, cellular therapies and clinical transfusion. Ellen van der Schoot, the incoming ISBT Scientific Secretary and Martin Olsson the retiring Scientific Secretary, together with the local organising and scientific committees, have developed a comprehensive agenda that addresses current issues and controversies in the science of transfusion medicine and cellular therapies.

The previous ISBT congress in Europe was held in 2013 and was a tremendous success. I am confident that this will be repeated in 2015 and hope that you will take the time to enjoy the historic city as well as maximise the opportunities provided by the scientific programme and commercial exhibition. The Congress provides a unique environment to meet colleagues from around the world, to exchange experiences and most importantly, to create memories that will help change the way we see and practice transfusion medicine.

The organisation of a successful congress involves input from many people and many organisations. Particular thanks go to Martin Bruce, the Congress president, the local organising committee and to MCI Amsterdam, the professional congress organiser. The support and participation of industry is also a key to success and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the sponsors and exhibitors and particularly the ISBT Corporate partners whose on-going backing is crucial to the success of the society. Lastly, special thanks and welcome to all of the delegates. I know that many will travel from distant parts of the world to be part of this event. Please be assured of a warm welcome and great British hospitality.

I look forward to meeting you all in London, United Kingdom.

Celso Bianco
President, ISBT
