World Blood Donor Day June 14
13 June 2012
June 14 is a day where we acknowledge and thank the anonymous voluntary unpaid heroes that donate their blood so that people who are in danger can survive. But June 14 is also a day to create awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products all over the world.
The theme of the 2012 World Blood Donor Day campaign, “Every blood donor is a hero” focuses on the idea that every one of us can become a hero by giving blood. The theme also strongly encourages more people all over the world to donate blood voluntarily and regularly.
World Blood Donor Day is celebrated in many different ways. Examples vary from human blood drops to other creative activities that raise awareness.
During the 6th Congress of the AfSBT in Mauritius, delegates wore red t-shirts and joined together to form a big human blood drop on the beach (see picture).
A group of three Iranian cyclists took the road of Tehran to Ankara in commemoration of World Blood Donor Day. This event was organised by the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) to promote the 2012 WBDD theme "Every Blood Donor is a Hero".
The 17 days challenge started on May 28, 2012 from Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization Headquarters and is finished on June 14, 2012 on World Blood Donor Day, at Ankara Blood Bank.
Let us all celebrate World Blood Donor Day on June 14!
