AfSBT2022 Congress, Dakar, Senegal 2022 September

Two years later than originally planned, the 10th International Congress of the Africa Society for blood Transfusion (AfSBT) was held between 19 and 22 of September, 2022 in Dakar, Senegal. The theme of the 2022 Dakar congress was Blood Transfusion and Health Priorities in Africa.

As part of the MoU that has been established between the two societies, ISBT supports an ISBT Academy day at the AfSBT biennial congresses. The ISBT Academy Day, which is traditionally held on Day 0 includes educational sessions that cover a central theme. The 2022 speakers, Claude Tayou Tagny (Cameroon), Lesley Bust (South Africa), Glynis Bowie (South Africa), Kamel Boukef (Tunisia), Swaibu Katare (Rwanda), Priscus Mapendo (Tanzania), Yassongui Mamadou Sekongo (Côte d’Ivoire), Israel Chipare (Namibia), and the moderators Jenny White (ISBT), Swaibu Gatare (Education Manager- AfSBT), Saliou Diop (CNTS, Dakar) shared their experiences about this year’s central theme: Getting To The Root Of Non-Conformances. The educational objectives aimed to introduce participants to the importance of quality management in blood services, more specifically on the identification and management of non-conformances in the framework of a well-organized and functional quality management system. 

The key highlights of the AfSBT2022 congress were:

  • 302 delegates attended
  • 208 abstracts were submitted, of which 42 were accepted for oral presentation, and 117 for poster presentation
  • 68 talks were delivered by invited expert speakers, which included 5 local (national) and 54 international speakers
  • 19 trade exhibition stands were taken up by 18 companies/partners
