Most Platelet transfusions in neonates and paediatric population are small-volume prophylactic transfusions to prevent bleeding in thrombocytopenic patients (i.e., transfusing when platelet counts fall below a defined threshold). Around 65 to 70% of podiatric intensive‑care and oncology patients received platelets prophylactically, and in neonates thresholds counts (e.g. 25 × 10⁹/L for pre‑term infants) are more evident.
