Terms of Reference

    The Donors and Donation working party was established in 2006, under the leadership of Diane de Coning from South Africa.

      The first working party meeting was held in Madrid, Spain in 2007, where the Terms of Reference for the working party were compiled as follows:

      • Responsible for adequate Donors and Donation sessions at all International and Regional ISBT Congresses.
      • Increase the ISBT membership in the Donors and Donation field of expertise.
      • Provide advice and guidance on Donors and Donation to ISBT Board of Directors.
      • Assume a leadership role in the organization of World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) 
      • Promote WBDD among ISBT membership
      • Promote 100 per cent voluntary non-remunerated blood donation within the ISBT membership according to the ISBT Code of Ethics on Blood Donation and Transfusion
      • Provide support for ISBT members striving to attain 100% voluntary non-remunerated blood donation
      • Collaborate within the field of donor recruitment, donor retention and donor selection with other ISBT Working Parties, such as Transmissible Diseases, Haemovigilance etc. 
      • Facilitate networking, benchmarking and the exchange of ideas on Donors and Donation between countries, blood services and other societies or associations.
      • Facilitate training on Donors and Donation in resource limited countries
      • Monitor trends and emerging new practice on Donors and Donation


                            Meetings of the working party took place in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2007; Cairo, Egypt in 2009 and Berlin, Germany in 2010, with an educational session held on social Marketing and Youth Blood Donor Clubs in Macao, China in 2008.

                                Task teams have been formed within the working party to address topical issues, including:- haemoglobin deferrals; recognition versus incentives; a guide to selecting safe blood donors; altruism and volunteerism.
